Homework tonight is spelling practice in preparation for tomorrow morning's test.
In math we practiced solving story problems using a strategy and a "parts and total" diagram box. We also finished our SOAR testing and Mrs. Shaw will pick them up next week to score. She'll notify us of those students who qualify for the next round of testing that will be done in the library in a couple of weeks. Those that pass that round of testing in the 90 percentile will be invited to participate in the SOAR program.
This afternoon we read about horses and wrote about what we're good at and what we're not so good at. Many students enjoyed reading theirs out loud and then we practiced writing questions and using the question mark.
Thanks to Katie's mom for volunteering for an art project on 10/17!
Homework tonight is practicing statements and questions. On the back, your child should write out three or more questions (using a question mark at the end of course) and then write (or you can write) statements (ending with periods of course) answering the questions.
We also need to have one more day of SOAR testing tomorrow to finish up the nonverbal tests.
We did "function machines" in math, took a reading test, and observed the growth of our seeds. Ask your child how the seed changed.
I'm becoming more like my dad everyday. I went out last night and bought the new Tony Bennett CD and I actually like it. Now if only my wife would have dinner on the table when I got home!
Sorry about no blogging yesterday, but we lost our Internet access all day. Homework last night was spelling practice and no homework tonight because I didn't get down to the copy machine on time. Math got a little tougher today. We worked on fact extensions like 9 + 7 = 16, then 90 + 70 = 160, and 900 + 700 = 1600. It got even tougher when we did problems like 13 - 5 = 8, then 33 - 5 = 28, and 83 - 5 - 78. The goal is to find the basic fact in harder problems to make them easier. We're just starting so don't expect perfection yet.
We read the story of Anthony Reynoso in "Born to Rope" and started to write a paragraph about what we're good at. Ask your child waht Anthony was good at and how he got so good. Since your children are such nice people they earned extra P.E. time with Mrs. Hively this afternoon.
Finally we started SOAR testing today with two verbal tests. We'll continue tomorrow morning with one more verbal and then one or two nonverbal tests.
Have a good night's sleep.
It's Friday, so not much blogging. I enjoyed meeting everyone at Open House and so far only one generous, kind, beautiful, intelligent, patient parent has volunteered to do a craft project. I'm sure there will be more soon.
We did our spelling test, read Time for Kids, took our first math test, had Fun Friday, and did some show and tell. Not bad for a Friday.
Have a good weekend.
Homework tonight is another subject/'predicate page. Whoo Hoo!
We did "Frames and Arrows" in math today to help us skip count and look for patterns. We took our final Gates test and enjoyed reading James Marshall's version of "Goldilocks."
See you tomorrow night at Open House.
Homework tonight is a grammar page practicing the subject and predicate parts of a sentence. I also asked them to write their own sentence on the back and find the subject and predicate of it.
We practiced with money again in math and discussed the appropriate times to use estimating to find the answer. We started the Gates testing this morning and did the Vocabulary test. Tomorrow morning we'll take the comprehension test. Next week we'll do the SOAR Testing (someone remind me at Open House to talk more about it).
This afternoon Mr. Salzman came in talked about appropriate hallway behavior. When he left we read an almost two week old Time for Kids magazine and discussed it. The end of the day we talked about subjects and predicates and started our homework page.
Don't forget to send in your donation (if you so desire) for our library using the "One for Books" label.
Have a good night.
Homework tonight is spelling practice. The bonus words for the week: actually, acute, and adapt.
I'll see you on Thursday night for Open House. Go Jaguars tonight.
Homework tonight is spelling practice. I sent home a page but if your child needs more practice on certain words than is provided on that page then feel free to improvise.
We found the difference between two numbers using a number grid, went over yesterday's social studies test, practiced writing sentences, and worked on a rough draft of "My Summer Vacation."
Enjoy your evening.
Look for a huge packet of fund raising information from the PTO. Homework tonight is a continuation of last night's. Your child should turn some of those brainstorming ideas done last night into real sentences on the page that went home tonight.
We practiced equivalent name boxes today in math and took our first social studies test and reading test today.
See you tomorrow.
This morning we had a good time learning about New York City. We read a page about it in our social studies book and then had our own birds-eye view of it by using Google Earth. It was pretty clear from up above the differences between an urban, suburban, and rural area. Comparing Chattaroy to NY is pretty eye-opening! We made a tally chart and bar graph of the number of letters in our first and last names. Ask your child which one was longer for our class.
We read the first story out of our reading book and almost finished our "All About Me" pages. Hopefully they'll be hanging on your child's locker before Open House next Thursday.
Have a good evening.
We read and discussed how communities are different from each other. We saw the differences between an urban, suburban, and rural communities. Ask your chiild which one best describes our community.
We tried out all the different math tools we'll be using this year from a ruler to a template. We also took our first pretest in spelling and learned our first reading skill: sequencing.
Homework tonight is spelling practice. For the good spellers I also gave them two bonus words: abolish and achieve.
Two Monday Night Football games tonight!
We learned how to use our Math Reference books today and played the math game "Less than You." We also enjoyed our first issue of Time for Kids magazine and discussed New Orleans and the ex-planet Pluto.
We went to library for the first time this afternoon, and I realize that I haven't posted our special class schedule so here it is:
Monday Music 9:30 - 10:10
Tuesday P.E. 9:30 - 10:10
Wednesday Music 9:30 - 10:10
Thursday P.E. 9:30 - 10:10
Friday Library 1:00 - 1:40
Have a good weekend!
We used the number grid to add and subtract for math and continued writing our "All About Me" papers. Today we turned our ideas into sentences and tomorrow will put the sentences into a paragraph form, at least that's the plan.
Still no homework except to watch the Federer vs. Blake match at the U.S. OPen on the USA network (just kidding).
