Tonight's homework is a math page in which you get to put together a polyhedron. Woohoo!
We have finally learned all the lower case cursive letters, so next week I'll start requiring spellling homework to be done in cursive. Be prepared for some complaining. We'll start on the capitals soon.
Don't forget to turn in your Book-It minutes for January.
Homework tonight is spelling practice. The bonus words this week are pentagon, permission, and possession.
In math we learned about polyhedrons. Ask your child what one is and see if they can also tell you about faces, edges, and vertices. We also began learning about Italy in preparation for our Reading Olympics (look for more information soon). If you have any information on Italy or know a good guest speaker, then let me know.
Have a good night.
Homework tonight is a math page practicing angles.
Today in math we learned about symmetry. Ask your child to find an object around the house tonight that has at least one line of symmetry.
We also had a good time in science this morning. We put hot and cold water into a cup of room temperature water and discovered that hot water is less dense than cold water. Ask your child how we observed that today.
Go Seahawks!
Homework tonight is spelling practice. Don't forget there's no school on Friday, so our final test will be Thursday.
In math we learned how to measure angles with a tool we made in class (do you remember the name of that tool?). Ask your child to show you how to measure an angle with it.
We also learned about immigrants to Brazil and saw how they blend the old with the new.
Go Seahawks!
Homework tonight is spelling practice.
In math we drew angles using straws and a ruler (ask your child!). Mr. Salzman came in and talked to us about hallway behavior and we tried finishing up our snowman directions. I hope our snowman directions will be hanging up in the hallway soon.
Tomorrow's Friday!
Tonight's homework is a grammar page on verb tenses.
Today in math we learned about various polygons like pentagons, hexagons, and octagons. We learned that a regular polygon has equal sides and equal angles.
We had a little difficulty making our themometers for science this morning, but we did discover that heat causes water to expand and the lack of heat will cause water to contract. Ask your child how we know that.
We ended the day working on our snowman directions...we should finish them tomorrow.
Homework tonight is spelling practice. The focus for this week's words is the suffixes -er, -or, and -ist. The bonus words are notable, octagon, and opinion.
Today in math we learned about quadrangles. Ask your child to describe one of those. In social studies we read about immigrants and their contribution to our country.
Do you think the Seahawks will finally appear in Super Bowl?
Homework tonight is spelling practice.
We learned about triangles in math and had a good discussion about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his work. Ask your child what he/she learned about Dr. King today.
We ended the day with revising our snowmen instructions.
Homework tonight is a grammar page on verbs.
In math today we learned how to draw angles and began discussing their measurement (full turn, half turn, and quarter turn). We also took a social studies test and started our "How to Build a Snowman" directions.
Have a good night.
We learned about parallel and intersecting lines today in math, and I sent home a math page from yesterday's lesson for homework. Earlier in the morning we experimented with the surface tension of water. Ask your child how many drops of water they could place on a penny and what happened when we added a drop of soapy water. While you're at it, see if they can define surface tension.
This afternoon after reading a fun story, Tops and Bottoms, we practiced writing more directions. Tomorrow everyone is going to start writing the directions for how to build a snowman to be turned in for a grade later in the week or next week. To get your child ready, ask them what steps they would take to build one if we had any snow!
See you tomorrow.
This morning we started a new chapter in math on geometry. We learned the difference between segments, rays, and lines. We also learnd how to name them. We also discussed the impact of trains and the telegraph for our country especially as we expanded west in social studies.
This afternoon we talked about summarizing what we read by not giving too many details and focusing on the main idea.
Tonight's homework is spelling practice.
In math today we learned how to make a line graph. It was just our first attempt so some aren't too sure about it yet. But tonight's homework will give your chld a little more practice. They seem to have the toughest time figuring out which line to plot the point. They may need your assistance.
We also attended a 911 presentation this morning. Ask your child what he/she learned about using 911.
This afternoon we wrote a set of directions together. We wrote "How to Come In from Recess" and numbered all our directions and started each one with an action word. We'll be working on writing directions over the next couple of weeks.
I'm looking forward to the Rose Bowl tonight. I'm not sure it can match last night's Orange Bowl. Enjoy the game!
Happy New Year!
We had a good day back. We started the morning with social studies and learned about St. Louis. Ask your child why being near where two rivers meet is a good place. We ended the moring with practicing place values in math. Your child should now know the place values up to one million and down to the thousandths.
This afternoon we read our first entry in the Washington Choice Book Awards contest and learned about following steps in a process. Then we found verbs in sentences and had our pretest in spelling.
Our first homework of the new year is spelling practice.
Have a good evening.
