Homework tonight is spelling.  Watch out!  There are several tought words on this week's list, and, being the grumpy old teacher that I am, I've required that it be done in cursive handwriting.  Your children didn't like that idea.

We're also asking students to bring in an empty tissue box or shoe box this week so that we can make Valentine holders on Friday with Mrs. Garcia.

Book order also went home tonight, and it's time to turn in Pizza Hut minutes as well.

Goodbye January.

Homework tonight is spelling practice.  Since we learned the last two lower case cursive letters, I've asked the students to do their homework in cursive.   If it's too hard for them, then let them do it the regular way and we'll keep practicing here.

We had a good time with science this afternoon.   We made our own thermometers and learned that heat makes water expand and coldness made water contract.  Ask your child how we discovered that.

Enjoy your evening.

Homework tonight is an easy math page.  We learned all about quadrangles today.

If the homework gets done early, encourage your child to practice some of this week's spelling words.

The students enjoyed their extra P.E. time today as their reward for being the Soup Label Winners for the month of December.

Enjoy your evening.  Check out the great tennis from Australia tonight at 6:30.

Homework tonight is a math page.  On the page are several difficult words describing triangles.  Your child is not responsible for memorizing the terms yet, it's just an introduction.  It should be an easy page of drawing triangles and measuring some sides.

In science this afternoon we had a fun time observing water flow downhill.  We even had races.  Ask your child which drop won every race.

Enjoy your evening.

We're up to 9 hours and 5 minutes of daylight.

We read about jaguars in our TFK  magazine today.   If you'd like to read more about them click here.

I'm picking a Steeler vs. Falcon Super Bowl.

Have a good weekend.

Thursday, January 20, 2005

Well, I mistakenly sent home two pages of homework tonight (one math and one spelling).  You can just quickly look through the math one, and then do the spelling page to be turned in tomorrow morning.

In math today we learned about parallel and interesting segments, rays, and lines.  Most students are wrapping up their snowman directions and doing a nice job of publishing them.   I hope you get to see them all at conferences right before spring break just when snowmen are a cold memory.

We learned about surface tension today in science.  Ask your child how many drops of water they were able to place on top of a penny.   They were quite surprised.  Then ask them what shape the drops formed and why.  That should make for some interesting dinner conversation.

Have a good night, and go Zags!

Wednesday, January 19, 2005

Another late start today, but we didn't miss math today we just moved it to the afternoon.  We began the chapter on geometry today and learned about segments, rays, and lines.  Your child should be able to show you his/her new skills on tonight's math homework page.

This morning we read a cute story called "Tops and Bottoms" together and moved to the editing stage with our Snowman directions.

See you tomorrow.

Tuesday, January 18, 2005

The two hour delay this morning was a good call.  Most of our class made it safely to school by 9:30.  Several students were missing because the buses were not able to run all their routes.  Hopefully it will be easier tomorrow.

We didn't  do math today due to the delay.  We started the morning with reading and discussed the skill of summarizing.   We ended the morning by revising our Snowman directions.  Ask your child how his/her directions are coming along.

This afternoon we did our first science lesson on water (I sent home a parent page that summarizes the unit).  Today we learned that when water spills out it either beads or is absorbed.

We ended the day with our spelling pretest, so homework tonight is a spelling practice page.

Drive Safely.

Wednesday, January 12, 2005

Tonight's homework is an editing page.  It should help us to edit our Snowman directions in a couple of days.

I've got some things to do, so have a good evening.

Tuesday, January 11, 2005

Today in math we learned how to make a line graph by taking the data from our Sunrise/Sunset chart and turning it into a line graph.   Tonight's homework is more practice on line graphs.

Tomorrow we will begin our rough draft on "How to Build a Snowman."  So if you get a chance let your child "warm up" by telling you the steps of how he/she likes to build a snowman.

Finally ask your child how he/she did on the social studies test this afternoon.  Since it was pretty difficult, I told them I would give them another crack at it tomorrow afternoon.

The new science kits came in today.  We'll be studying water over the next several months.  Our first lesson will be on Thursday.

Enjoy your evening!

No spelling this week because we're doing reading tests rather than a new chapter.  So homework tonight is a cursive page.  We've learned all the letters on the page, so it's a review page.

We're still talking about decimals in class.  Thanks to Mrs. Clevenger we had a nifty place value book that helped us in our study.  Hopefully all our hard work will pay off on Wednesday when we take our chapter math test.

This afternoon we learned about our neighbor to the north - Canada.  Ask your child what ways we're like and different than our neighbor.

Have a good night.

Friday, January 07, 2005

Not only did we continue on with tenths and hundreths today, but we threw in some thousandths just to keep things stirred up.  But rejoice, homework tonight is spelling rather than math!   But speaking of math, don't worry if your child has not mastered the decimal places.  We're just introducing the concept and mastering will come later.  Hopefully you've seen a little learning take place.

We learned about the birthday of our country today.  Ask your child when it was.  We discussed the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and George Washington.  See if they can remember anything about them.

Have a good evening and Go Zags!

Continued working on tenths and hundredths.  Today we learned that a meter can be divided into tenths and hundredths (10 cm = 0.1m ; 1 cm = 0.01m).  Tonight's homework is more practice, so hopefully you'll see a little improvement from last night.

We wrote directions for how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich later in the morning.  If you're looking for dinner ideas, your child is now ready to make everyone a lovely PB&J sandwich!

Enjoy your evening and sandwich!

More tenths and hundredths today. You can see if your child has an inkling of what's going on with those strange words with the math homework page tonight.

We're learning to write directions and reviewed common and proper nouns.

This afternoon we read about three different explorers to North America. Ask your child what they were trying to do when the discovered the Americas.

Learned the lower case "a" and "d" this afternoon.

Tuesday, January 04, 2005

I hope everyone had a good New Year.  We began our new year in math learning two new place values:  the tenths and hundredths.  We'll work on it some more tomorrow and even send a homework page tomorrow night so you can see how your child is doing.

Tonight's homework is a spelling page.  Your child might need some extra practice this week due to a lot of silent letters.

Enjoy your evening!
