Tonight's homework is a geometry math page.   Today we learned about parallel and intersecting lines.

Have a good night.

Tonight's homework is to practice the spelling words for this week.

We started a new chapter in math today.  We'll be spending the next couple weeks learning geometry.  Today your child learned the difference between a segment, line, and ray.

Also, check your child's notebook for the latest science test that was returned and discussed today.

Have a good night.

We took a bunch of tests today (math, reading, and science). Look for them in a backpack near you soon.

Tonight's homework is more practice on possessive nouns. They're having a tough time knowing where to put the apostrophe in relation to the "s."

Tomorrow's Friday!

Tonight's homwork is a math page that will provide more practice on making line graphs. We made a line graph out of our length of daylight data in class today. Most students were able to finish it on their own, but a couple of students had a difficult time knowing where to plot the points. I hope the homework goes well.

This afternoon we discussed space exploration. I had a good time reminiscing about the Apollo space program. I told the students I would give a piece of gum to the first student who can tell me the name of the Apollo 11 astronaut who stayed in the command module while Armstrong and Aldrin where on the moon. Do you remember?

We're also working on a new writing project in the morning. Each student is in the rough draft stage of writing a paragraph on their favorite place. You can talk about that with your child tonight as well.

Enjoy your evening.

We enjoyed our Friday.  I've called in the book orders (thanks to all the help from Mrs. Crabtree) and I've prepared lessons plans for the sub on Tuesday.  If you want to find me on Tuesday, I'll be downtown at the Science LASER Conference.  I'll be checking out all the new science curriculum for the district (maybe having a nice lunch as well!).

Homework on Tuesday will be another Common/Proper Noun page.

Enjoy your day off on Monday.  I'm rooting for the Panthers and Colts this weekend.

I had a meeting after school and have to run, so here's tonight's homework:  Grammar page practicing common and proper nouns (proper nouns begin with a capital letter).  Also some students didn't finish their social studies test and have that as part of their homework as well.

One more thing, I'll be out of the room tomorrow afternoon at a Technology Planning meeting, so I probably won't be blogging anthing tomorrow.  Homework tomorrow will be some type of spelling page.

Have a good night.

We went right back to our decimals today and it seems to me that the students are making progress. The hardest part was learning to write five hundredths like this (.05) rather than this (.5).  We worked some on trading 10 hundredths for a tenth which seem to help them understand the place values better.

We enjoyed the story "The Nights of the Pufflings" from our reading book.  Ask your child what makes those nights so special and where the story took place.

This afternoon we learned what causes the phases of the moon.  We even demonstrated the phases with a ball on our overhead projector.  Your child should be able to conduct the some demonstration at home with a flashlight and a ball.  We're going to work on the concept a little more on Thursday.  I did add a new nightly homeworkYour child should go out each night and take a peek up into the ngiht sky to see what phase the moon is in and then draw it on his/her new January calendar (see your child's notebook behind the science divider).  If it's cloudy they can just draw a cloud in the day's box.

The other homework tonight is to practice their spelling on the worksheet provided.

Have a good evening!

Thursday, January 08, 2004

With our late start, we again chipped away at learning decimals. We practiced with some manipulatives and wrote down a couple of decimals based on drawings (like tonight's homework). Tonight's homework is to work on the decimal math page. Keep it mind that it's still pretty new and that we will continue working on it tomorrow.

This afternoon we learned a lot about the moon. Your child should be able to answer the following three questions: (1) How big is the moon compared to the earth? (takes about four moons to go across the middle of the earth), (2) How far away is the moon from earth? (around 250, 000 miles), and (3) What are the two ways the moon moves? (revolves and rotates).

I'm also collecting Book-It minutes from December and passing out Pizza Hut coupons. If your child read for at least 350 minutes during December, then send me a note so I can give your child his/her well-earned pizza coupon. I also sent home two book orders today from Scholastic and will be accepting orders through Friday, January 16.

Have a good warm eveing!

Happy New Year!  I must admit the two-hour delay was nice this morning.  I had time for something other than Cheerios, and we were able to get a start on a math lesson before going to Music.  To kick off the New Year in math, we're learning decimals.  Like I said, we barely touched on it today, so if we're here tomorrow we'll do a practice page and homework page on decimals.

During the afternoon we started learning about the city of Montreal.  We learned the French started the city and they specialized in fur trading.  They traded with the Ojibwa Indians.  We ended the afternoon with a pretest in spelling.  Tonight's homework is to correct the test and begin practicing the words that were missed.

It's still snowing, so I'm not sure if we'll see you tomorrow or not.  In any case, have a good night!
